Traditional BSS Challenges: Why Telcos’ Tech Debt Is So Hard to Pay Off
Fragmentation, manual processes, broken customer experience: the traditional BSS challenges holding telcos back. Get the full diagnosis here.

If telcos have known for years that their BSS systems are a problem, why is it still so hard to transform them? The answer lies in understanding the nature of traditional BSS challenges: these aren’t isolated bugs. They’re structural problems that reinforce each other.
The first and most critical is fragmentation. Most current BSS platforms are a collection of legacy systems with siloed architectures: the CRM doesn’t communicate well with billing, order management is disconnected from revenue assurance, and the customer care system has its own database. Every new integration is a patch on top of a patch.
That fragmentation has direct operational consequences. Manual processes multiply because systems don’t integrate on their own. Data gets duplicated, goes out of sync, and becomes unreliable. Modifying a workflow means touching several systems at once, with the risk of breaking something along the way.
The impact on customer experience is immediate: broken journeys, repeated authentication requests, inconsistent support, billing issues that take days to resolve. In a world where customers expect instant responses and personalized experiences, this is simply unacceptable.
Business agility suffers too. Launching or modifying a service can take weeks. Adapting the product catalog to new monetization strategies requires costly interventions. And when the market shifts, telcos watch digital competitors respond in hours while they’re still in planning meetings.
On top of that, there’s the complexity of customization. Every operator has a BSS tailored over years of adjustments, which makes upgrades slow, risky, and expensive. Changing anything requires an exhaustive impact analysis before touching a single line.
Finally, security and compliance risks round out the picture: legacy BSS systems often fall short of modern data privacy standards and struggle to implement robust audit trails.
Understanding these challenges is the first step toward designing a real transformation strategy. In the next blog, we look at how AI, and in particular generative AI and agentic AI, is starting to change the rules.
