What We Can Expect from Edge Computing Mini Data Centers
Data centers will be a lot smaller in the future. Learn how mini data centers are increasing in popularity as tech companies seek to increase efficiency.
Much like other physical aspects of technology, data centers will be a lot smaller in the near future. While we’re used to seeing large warehouse-sized ones that are used to house hundreds or even thousands of servers, mini data centers are increasing in popularity as tech companies seek to increase efficiency.
The Introduction and Implementation of Mini Data Centers for Edge Computing
One of the companies paving the way for the future is EdgeMicro, a startup currently testing its compact data centers in three installations located in Tampa, FL, Raleigh, NC, and Austin, TX.
EdgeMicro’s mini data centers are around the size of a spacious bedroom, and their dimensions are perfectly convenient for transportation via 18-wheelers. They are vastly smaller than the sometimes dauntingly massive data centers we’re used to seeing.
Large data centers came about because of the need for centralized computing and increased efficiency, but the landscape has changed as more companies and consumers alike demand instantaneous computing capabilities. Everything from smartphone response times to video game streaming relies on fast connections with minimal latency. Centralization simply doesn’t accommodate this demand because it takes a considerable amount of time for computing requests to travel through a network to a data center located far from the user. Even the slightest delay can aggravate users, particularly in immersive VR environments where the user expects real-time responsiveness.
Experts such as Vapor IO CEO Cole Crawford have made it clear that it’s only going to become more difficult to route internet traffic. Crawford plainly stated that “the Internet is broken.” The use of “edge” computing (i.e., physically placing servers closer to the user) is now seen as one of the best solutions to meet the growing demand for instant connectivity.
Having data centers closer to the end-user helps reduce latency, allowing users to connect faster with little delay. In addition to faster connections, mini data centers located close to users can also help reduce the overall costs of data transmission. There is also additional security for data based on storage methods and location. Their use can also bring about a variety of new services.
A Growing Interest in Edge Computing
Many companies, in addition to EdgeMicro and Vapor IO, are also expressing interest in where data center technology is headed, such as Axellio, DartPoints, EdgePresence, MetroEdge, and Zellabox. The surging demand for optimized connectivity and the drive for innovation has helped make mini data centers prevalent before their necessity, which is a rare occurrence in this industry. Normally, tech companies have a hard time keeping up with growing demands. Still, edge computing facilities are already showing up before most people are even aware of the concept of edge computing.
However, Credit Suisse analyst Sami Badri has also predicted that the demand for edge computing will more evenly match the development of these facilities. The potential uses for edge computing are what could continue to drive this technology in different directions. Some uses include their placement near multiplayer online gaming competitions or, possibly, near-autonomous self-driving cars to allow for optimal response time.
The Challenges of Mini Data Center Integration
There are some potential issues concerning their viability, though. For instance, while having unmanned data centers may make sense in certain areas, a data center housing thousands of dollars worth of computing equipment with minimal security compared to traditional data centers could present a considerable risk. Their compact size and mobility also enable properly-equipped thieves to steal the entire facility easily.
The exact future of computing may still be unclear. Still, the fact remains that edge computing with the use of mini data centers is an appealing solution for an increasingly complex networking paradigm.
