Why are CSPs moving to the Cloud?
This post is about understanding what risks and considerations have to be taken into account by CSP when moving to the cloud.
It’s common knowledge that telecommunications systems change faster than other industries. However, most telecommunications companies are not able to move that fast, increasing costs, operative efforts and finally, final customer dissatisfaction.
Cloud computing, cloud-based applications and Cloud technologies, in general, are forcing several shifts for all markets due to the high benefits such as scalability, durability, lower costs, business continuity etc.
This post is not about Cloud evangelization (Cloud providers should do this). Instead, it’s about understanding what issues are solved, what risks and considerations have to be taken into account by Telecommunications providers in case of moving their applications to the Cloud and finally, Intraway’s role in the industry.
The expected mass exodus into cloud technology has been forthcoming, especially with the 5G rollout picking up pace.
Just like everybody?
Telecommunications providers are not moving to the cloud just because everybody does. Providers’ needs are widely known due to industry growth during the recent years: provide low-latency, high performance or reliable communication systems for people and businesses but expanding human and financial resources in datacenters maintenance, energy issues at On-Premises environment, computing sizing are examples of issues that providers must handle in the daily operations that keep them from a focus on the develop new solutions and technologies.
Cloud shared responsibility model concept is fundamental for understanding these efforts of moving to the cloud. This means: Telcos will focus their efforts on improving and developing their own business leaving side operations to the cloud providers.
In fact, Telcos on Cloud leads to an exciting synergy:
- Cloud-native applications used by final customers are being developed each and every day but without a high-quality communication technology such as LTE, 5G or FFTX to support them, it is impossible to provide a good customer experience.
- Connectivity demands (in terms of capability, latency and a large etcetera) are higher each day, but Cloud providers and their already mature platforms could make their lives easier to achieve higher bandwidth or low latencies.
“Not everything that shines is gold but could be”
Ok, I am a telco, and I am ready to go to the cloud, but let’s be clear, what should I expect?
Benefits
- Reduced costs: Somebody (not somebody, a cloud provider) is taking care of maintenance, scaling. You invest in your own growth.
- Disaster recovery capabilities: Cloud providers have already invested a lot of effort to improve their DRP standards, as a telco you just use it in order to achieve
- Integration across applications: Since there are several native applications and Cloud services involving computing, databases, networking, security and migration duties, as a telco, your duty is to use these services to improve your own services.
- Competitive and Flexible: Sizing for applications and faster implementation.
Risks
- Move as fast as the cloud: Today’s cloud, for sure, will not be tomorrow’s cloud. Understanding these changes will keep you competitive.
- CyberSecurity, threads and data business management:
- Legal and compliance.
Intraway
Understanding telecommunication providers’ service lifecycle allows Intraway to solve your needs and improve, but adding our different cloud-native applications to the process, which already exploits the benefits of cloud and handles the different risks already exposed, for sure will help you prepare for the challenges the industry faces.
